Governors Back Study on Shifting Federal Programs to States
President Eisenhower urged governors to cooperate on a plan to shift some federal programs to state control with possible tax adjustments. GOP leaders showed mixed support while Democrats criticized the move as an empty dream. A bipartisan task force would study which duties could return to states and how funding and taxes would adjust. Governors from New Hampshire, California, New York, Kentucky, North Carolina and others weighed in as the conference considered the proposal.
