Space pioneer Wernher von Braun dies after cancer battle

Wernher von Braun, the German born rocket leader who helped the United States reach the moon, died Thursday in Alexandria Virginia. He had surgery in 1973 for a malignant liver tumor and had a curtailed schedule since. He was and served as Fairchild vice president of engineering and development until retirement. President Carter mourned his role in space exploration and technological progress.

S Korea pullout plan persists despite Senate opposition

The White House reaffirmed President Carter’s plan to withdraw U S ground combat troops from South Korea in a phased four to five year timeline while the Senate blocked endorsement. Rex Granum said the president will consult Congress and submit annual reports, keeping security interests in mind, with no fixed timetable or troop numbers disclosed. The Senate, in a 64-21 vote on state department authorization, rejected the pullout timetable and urged any reduction be set by joint decision of the President and Congress.

Computer blamed for 1 day delay in Shuttle tests

A computer failure at Edwards Air Force Base forced a 24 hour postponement of the first manned Space Shuttle Enterprise test flight. The malfunction affected one of four autopilot computers guiding the maneuvering gear. Fred Haise Jr and Gordon Fullerton were to pilot the shuttle atop a Boeing 747 during a dress rehearsal. Phase two of the approach and landing tests proceeded with Houston’s Mission Control coordinating simulated data.

Eel Star kelp harvester righted after parbuckling salvage

A 650 ton kelp harvester Eel Star capsized off Santa Barbara Sunday and was righted early today by a double tug and derrick barge using parbuckling. Crowley Maritime Salvage led the operation with Capt. Robert McKenzie supervising. Twenty thousand gallons of fuel were at risk as pumps began dewatering and the vessel was prepared for tow to a Los Angeles or San Diego drydock. The five man crew landed safely after the capsize caused by shifting kelp load.

Carter Tax Return Delayed As IRS Audits 1975 Taxes

President Carter faces an IRS audit of 1975 taxes and has asked his tax attorney to favor government positions on borderline items. U S income rises six tenths of a percent in May

U S personal income rose six tenths of a percent in May to 1807 billion dollars annual rate, a smaller gain than April. Wages and salaries climbed nine billion, manufacturing payrolls added three and a half billion, while declines elsewhere trimmed the monthly total.
