Equal Pay for Equal Work Ruling Expands View of Job Similarity
A federal case against Wheaton Glass Co. in Millville, NY, held that women performing similar work need not be identical to men but must be substantially the same. The ruling, upheld by the U.S. Court of Appeals, limits pay differences where tasks are equal in effort and responsibility, while noting some jobs remain exempt. The Wage and Hour Division of the Department of Labor enforces these provisions from its Long Beach office.
