Atypical Minister Shaped by City Mission and War Service
Dr. Burcham, a World War II navy chaplain turned minister, built church membership from 1,? to 1,200 at a Canada Presbyterian and later led Covenant in Long Beach. He promoted social sermons and urban ministry, engaging Head Start, Community Improvement League, YMCA, and exchanges with St John Baptist Church to reach disenfranchised youth. He defends balanced leadership amid church declines and youth dissidence, urging reconciliation over polemics while seeking relevant faith amid societal unrest.
