Casals Festival opens with Casals standing ovations in San Juan

Pablo Casals, 92, received two standing ovations as he presided at the opening night of the 13th Casals Music Festival in San Juan Puerto Rico directing Mozart as the program’s final piece. Maj Gen Stewart Menzies, longtime MI6 head and source for Bond’s M, died in London at 78. James Bond creator Ian Fleming partially based M on Menzies. Also noted: James Farley, ex-postmaster general, turned 87 at Yankee Stadium after attending a family celebration. the Baseball Hall of Fame-bound hats and gifts were presented. Lieutenant General Bruce Palmer Jr., to be Army vice chief of staff, will wear four stars. senior Army leadership changes announced by President Johnson include Westmoreland to head the Army and serve as top staff at the Pentagon.

Oklahoma Museum Honors Cowboy Tom Mix

Two days of ceremonies begin in Dewey Oklahoma to open a Tom Mix Museum honoring the former city marshal turned Western film star. A barbecue and preview show are planned, with three survived Mix films to be screened and a 8 am Saturday opening. Monte Montana will headline a Saturday night trick riding show at the Dewey Roundup site. The museum, a joint project of Dewey and Bartlesville, originated in a three year effort to raise forty thousand dollars for memorabilia from a California collection. Mix died in a 1940 Arizona auto crash.

High School Stadium Set Afire in L A

Gasoline started a blaze at Manual Arts High School bleachers in Los Angeles causing about 20000 dollars in damage. Fire units confined the fire to a 50 by 80 foot section but saved much of the surrounding facilities. The stadium, seating 8000, was to host graduation on June 3 with 535 seniors and families expected.

Archaeologists Confront Eviction at Mojave Dig Site

In the Mojave Desert near Calico Mountain a team led by Ruth Simpson fights a deadline as Glen S. Gunn, who holds claims to federally owned land, orders scientists off. He values the land at 25 million dollars and seeks to sell to researchers. The Bureau of Land Management weighs whether claims merit mining while negotiations continue. The 1963 discovery was made by Miss Simpson for the San Bernardino County Museum.
