Minorities and women top Brown judge selections

Layoffs Seen in Highway Projects
Governor Brown told State Department of Transportation officials that declining revenues may force layoffs and cutbacks in highway projects. He noted that revenues from the T-cent gasoline tax are not keeping pace with rising costs, and maintenance budgets may shrink. Best said layoffs may be announced by week’s end, with efforts to place workers in government jobs. Brown warned of sacrifice but urged continued effort and hinted at considering a second term and selective freeway projects to provide jobs.
