Ike Hospitalized for Checkups

Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, age 75, was admitted to Walter Reed Army Hospital for routine follow up studies on arthritis and heart conditions. Hospital officials said the visit is routine and no bulletins will be issued on his condition or doctors’ findings.

Boy Panics Killed by Car on Freeway

A 2 year old boy retriev ing a rope on the Terminal Island Freeway was killed after turning into traffic. Joseph Rush of 40914 W.O Pear St died on arrival at St. Marys Hospital around 6:30 p.m. His uncle William Davis, 41, stopped his truck on the freeway to retrieve the rope. The boy ran, tripped, and ran into a northbound car driven by Thomas N. Roberts, 21, a Long Beach sailor aboard the USS Higbee.

Death toll in Hastings battle climbs in Vietnam

In Operation Hastings the communist death toll is estimated at 1,563 over two weeks, with 65 killed in a Marine strike on a range force and 726 bodies found. Another 837 North Vietnamese are listed as probable kills as heavy fighting rages in northwestern South Vietnam. A US general says Hanoi sought to exploit Saigon unrest. US casualties rose with 136 Americans killed in action last week, increasing the Viet Nam toll to 4,440. Separate report notes 542 sorties flown against North Viet Nam by air, naval, and Marine pilots.

Fumes Claim One Life at Linden Plant Incident

Fumes in the General Aniline & Film Corp dye manufacturing area caused multiple illnesses at the Linden New Jersey plant. Edward Curtis 61 of Rahway died after inhaling fumes. Alexander Nelson 50 of Cranford was hospitalized as a precaution. Sixteen workers affected in total with several evacuated and fourteen treated at plant and area hospitals. The fumes were unknown in origin but sources were located and shut off.
