No horse vaccine for California
The State Agriculture Department warns a vaccine against Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis is so scarce it won’t reach California for about a month. The USDA extends a quarantine to six states to curb a spread from Texas where 1,300 horses have died. Imperial County will get first vaccine priority, then Southern California. Authorities stress vaccination alone won’t stop transmission as dogs cattle and humans can spread VEE. Public Health conducts intensified mosquito sampling along the Mexican border. blood samples from sick horses should be sent to Berkeley for testing.
