Airman Freed After Haircut Dispute Over Order

Tokyo AP A U S Air Force commander vacated a four month hard labor sentence and $200 fine for airman Donald Wheeler of Cortez Colorado after finding legal errors in the summary court martial. Wheeler had refused a white sidewall haircut claiming he only challenged it and would resist again. The unit was disbanded and future haircuts require no such order. Wheeler’s base commander Col Charles W Johnstone said Wheeler has shown attitude change and there will be no new trial.

Pay Raised 3 Cents by Douglas Co

Douglas Aircraft Co Inc grants cost of living wage increases totaling three cents per hour for 15 500 employees at Long Beach plant effective Aug 5 lifting average hourly pay to 2 53 This is the third raise this year based on BLS statistics. Nearly 50 000 Douglas workers at El Segundo Santa Monica Oklahoma and North Carolina get similar boosts. Other Southern California plants North American Hughes Aircraft Kaiser Steel also grant about two cent hourly hikes.

Two Earth Tremors Off Aleutians Detected

Fordham University seismograph recorded two earthquakes near the Aleutian Islands early today. Seismologist Rev. Joseph Lynch noted shocks at 3:53 am and 4:02 am, with no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Burned by Wrecked Truck Blast at New Haven

In New Haven hundreds watched rescuers free a trucker's helper from a crashed rig. A gas tank exploded, burning at least 67 onlookers and rescuers. Wilfred Godfrey, 35, of Hartford, saved by a firefighter, remained in critical condition with extensive burns. Driver Underwood Woodford, 58, of Hartford, escaped with minor injuries. Cause under investigation. tank puncture and possible engine short circuit cited.

Low Mileage Sow Leaves Trail of Dollar Bills

Tulsa trooper investigates when a car six miles east of Tulsa dumps dollar bills. Mary Tramer of Pryor says she found a two year old son crossing a dollar bill from the car window. Trooper Henry helps recover nine dollars from the estimated ten tossed out and pushes the car to start.

Plane Lands Safely at Mojave Base After Hole Blows Out

A passenger died when a hole ripped through a Western Airlines Convair 249 at 10 000 feet over the Mojave Desert. Investigators suspect a self-inflicted gunshot widened the fuselage, causing the 4 by 7 foot opening. The plane landed safely. 12 passengers and 3 crew were unharmed. The missing man was S F Binstock, 62, of North Hollywood, a retired jeweler from the San Fernando Valley. He had bought a round trip policy for 125 000 with his wife as beneficiary. The incident prompted search efforts and a review of cockpit and washroom positions aboard the Las Vegas to Los Angeles flight.

Tunisia Bey Out in Birth of Republic

The Constituent Assembly deposed Bey Sidi Mohamed Al Lamin and proclaimed Tunisia a republic with Habib Bourguiba as president. Bourguiba announced the change at the throne room of the former Bardo Palace as armed police ringed the area and deputies cheered.

Couple drift 66 hours in small boat on Lake Ontario

James M. Cook and his wife Helen, both from Belleville Ontario, drifted 66 hours in a 14 foot outboard after foul weather. They survived by drinking lake water and sheltering with blankets. They were rescued near Locus Point and hospitalized for exposure.
