VA Eliminated 4 974 Beds This Year Says Whittier
Washington VA administrator Sumner G Whittier testified before Rep Teagues House Veterans Committee that 4 974 hospital beds were eliminated in the first year not withdrawn by the Budget Bureau or others. He said most beds had never been in use and were scattered among smaller hospitals and unused types. Whittier described VA policy to care for service connected and nonservice connected veterans who cannot pay. He noted Dublin VA currently uses 476 of 500 beds and seeks authority to open 3500 more, mainly for domiciliary care, with wards sometimes unable to accommodate patients. He cited staffing challenges and the need for doctors and nurses to staff certain hospitals.
