British paratroopers arrive in Jordan to support King Hussein days after a regional crisis. The deployment underscores Western backing for Hussein amid mounting tensions and potential threats to his rule. Military officers say the operation aims to deter aggression and stabilize the region.
British forces landed in Amman Jordan to thwart an imminent plot against King Hussein. US Marines in Lebanon and paratroopers in Turkey joined a broad Eastern Mediterranean buildup. The Eagle carrier neared Lebanese waters as the US Sixth Fleet watched nearby.
The United States backs Britain's intervention in Jordan but will not deploy U S troops for now. State Department officials said no American forces will enter Jordan at this time.
