First Court Case in North Orders Chicago Desegregation
UPI reports Federal District Judge Julius Hoffman ordered South Holland School District 154 to halt racial discrimination in student and teacher assignments as a first northern desegregation case under the 1944 Supreme Court ruling. The order requires desegregation steps, pupil and faculty assignments, and new construction plans, with a possible appeal stay sought by the district.

Fog Delays Powder Puff Fliers Race to Finish by Sundown
About 67 women pilots faced heavy fog delaying the final leg of the Powder Puff Derby across the southern U S. Sixty seven pilots aimed to land in Savannah by sundown for a 3000 prize. Several planes were already down and five more landed while one diverted due to icing. The 2000 mile cross country race continued as weather eased in parts.

U S to Feed 1000 Poor Counties
Washington government food programs will operate in all of the nation s 1000 lowest income counties this month and next. Distribution to needy families begins in 89 counties this month and 20 counties in August with food stamps starting in 38 counties this month and 58 more in August, per the Agriculture Department.
