Atlanta AP report cites deputy CIA director Lt. Gen. Vernon A. Walters defending agency activity before Rotary crowd. He argues critics distract from current threats, notes past orders against assassination were not pursued, and that concerns target events 10 to 15 years old while reminding times change as Castro era abuses are referenced.

Ford urged to reopen amnesty plan
Senators Gaylord Nelson and Jacob Javits urged President Ford to reopen the Vietnam draft amnesty program for resisters and deserters. They note several hundred who wish to seek clemency missed the March 31 cutoff and propose legislation to remove deadlines and extend protections, including 40 day visas for those abroad. Only about 20 percent of an estimated 125,000 evaders and deserters have applied.
