Education Group Supports Busing
SAN FRANCISCO UPI The National Education Association at its 108th convention supported desegregation busing to desegregate schools and opposed public funds for private and parochial schools. Delegates from southern states opposed the measures. The NEA also adopted a plan to study constitutional changes for the one million member group. Executive secretary Sam M Lambert said many delegates feared continued public funding for nonpublic schools would sustain economic and racial segregation in the South. Public schools are in a crisis, he added, and now is not the time to aid private schools.
