Nixon Cambodia venture failed to achieve aims
The Nixon administration launched military moves in Cambodia to deter Communist forces and bolster Lon Nol’s government as part of Vietnam War strategy. Despite four heavy raids on North Vietnam and secret aid to Cambodian troops, the Cambodian operation did not stop Khmer Rouge advances and left U.S. policy in flux with an extended, disputed campaign and ongoing support to Lon Nol. The plan evolved through interagency debate, with Abrams and Laird backing a more assertive attack, while Rogers warned against widening the war, and Nixon ultimately delayed full-scale invasion while pursuing limited strikes and ongoing aid.
