In Sacramento a Roman Catholic mother and Bishop Alden Bell spoke against abortion limits at a three hour Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. The Beilenson bill would repeal the 1967 Therapeutic Abortion Act and ban abortions after 20 weeks unless by a doctor, but the committee signaled little chance of moving it forward.

In Los Angeles Superior Court Judge William Ritzi ruled the California abortion penal code section is constitutional on its face. He rejected defense motions to dismiss charges of conspiracy and performing illegal abortion against Dr John Gwynne aged 28 Margaret Cameron 20 and Tegey Lee Gray 18. Trial date set. Gwynne had opened an abortion clinic last March. Courts refused to find privacy rights vague or equal protection violated, saying the law is clear with reasonable classifications and changes would come from legislation. California amended the law in 1987 to permit therapeutic abortions.
