Britons resist idea of Britain becoming American state
Readers of the London Daily Mail vocally opposed a Salt Lake City suggestion that Britain could become the 51st American state. Letters denounced the notion as drivel and subservience to the United States, with one supporter saying Europe should stay separate. Separately, entertainer Martha Raye praised visiting American troops in Vietnam and pledged future visits to boost morale.
