Abortion Debate Sparks Rallies Across States
Supporters and opponents rallied and prayed Tuesday, marking one year since the Supreme Court struck down most abortion laws. Crowds gathered in St Paul and Washington, D C, with marches, services, and petitions urging or opposing constitutional amendments. The scene spanned California, New York, and Oakland churches, while Cardinal Cooke paused hearings and centers for unmarried mothers emerged as alternatives. The ruling prompted state limits in ten states and an estimated 800,000 supervised abortions to date.

Assembly panel kills wider news shield law
SACRAMENTO UPD The Assembly Judiciary Committee killed legislation to expand California shield law protecting newsmen from divulging unpublished notes recordings and TV film. Chair Charles Warren said the proposals were dead for now as publishers judges and others failed to reach agreement and clarify First Amendment rights. If talks revive the effort new bills could be introduced later.
