Vast Mars wind sculptures captured by Mariner 9 image

United Press International reports a JPL release of a spectacular Mariner 9 photo of Mars showing a vast chasm with branching canyons and eroded plateaus. The image, taken Jan 12 from 1 225 miles, centers on Tiberius Lacus, 200 miles south of the equator, amid a wind sculptured landscape with a tree like drainage pattern.

Amchitka quake data seen aid prediction and mitigation

U S officials say the Cannikin underground blast at Amchitka Island yielded precise seismic data aiding understanding of earthquake mechanisms and aftershocks. NOAA notes no natural quakes or tsunamis from the test, but the magnitude 7 event temporarily moved the island. Data may improve earthquake-resistant building and prediction efforts.
