FDA recalls 24 toy types as hazardous to children
The FDA announced a recall of 24 toy types including squeeze toys rattles flutes music boxes and dolls sold Oct 14 to Dec 30. Items deemed hazardous under the 1969 Toy Safety Act pose inhalation swallowing or cut risks and the agency plans new safety standards for heat electrical and mechanical hazards in toys.

Retirement stuns judge Worley amid illness and brief tenure
The chief judge of the U S Court of Customs and Patent Appeals says he did not know he was retiring until the White House announced it. Eugene Worley, 63, longtime court member and former Texas congressman, cites illness and limited attendance as factors. He notes doctors told him to quit years ago but stayed to keep the court stable. The White House and Washington Post report he appeared in court only 17 days in the past 34 months. A separate Sacramento item notes a $238,000 bill to train teachers in general disease education introduced by Assemblyman Richard Barnes in California.

FCC denies caving in to AT&T over rate inquiry
Chairman Dean Burch rejected claims the FCC caved to AT&T as it dropped an investigation into Bell System long distance rate practices. In a letter to five senators and five representatives, Burch pledged the commission will continue to regulate Bell vigorously and effectively with all the resources available.
