Laird Predicts Vietnam Pullout Will Meet Goal

Defense Secretary Melvin Laird said U S troop reductions in Vietnam could meet or beat the May 1 target as Allied and American officials reported a heartening Vietnam situation. In Cambodia, operations and transport routes were being pushed amid heavy fighting and Cambodian Prime Minister Lon Nol traveled to coordinate the clearing effort. Laird stressed a shift to South Vietnamese control, with remaining U S units acting as security forces rather than combat troops. Echoes of the visit appeared on Hanoi and Moscow broadcasts. Separately, jazz star Ernie Caceres died after a long illness.
