Roybal Presses Alcatraz Transfer Bid for Indians
Congressman Edward Roybal pledged to press a House resolution seeking immediate negotiations to transfer unencumbered title of Alcatraz Island to Indian occupants. He met with 30 to 60 Indians at the island prison site on a cold foggy day and said passage of the resolution would be his first objective upon returning to Washington. The measure, cosponsored by nine others, aims to end the government’s hold on the island and make the site available for a Native American cultural and educational center. Roybal said the demand is nonviolent and rooted in a desire to share Indigenous culture with the nation.
