No value-added tax in Nixon's 1973 budget says Shultz
President Nixon's budget chief George P. Shultz said the fiscal 1973 budget sent to Congress will show a deficit but no request for a value-added tax. He stressed the plan is based on full employment, balancing only if the economy runs at full capacity, with current-year deficits expected due to below-full employment. The administration may study a value-added tax as a possible substitute for property tax, but no decisions were announced.

Friedman's critique of Nixon wage-price controls sparks debate
Milton Friedman called the wage-price freeze a witch-doctor cure and said it chilled the economy, muting the recovery and creating uncertainty. He argued Nixon was snowed by the policy while Gov. Heagan and others defended it, as Ashbrook signaled a 1968 promises gap ahead of a potential primary bid.
