Midwest Blizzard Closes Roads. Kills, Halts Travel Across Regions
A major winter storm battered the Midwest causing interstate lanes to be impassable, triggering a wave of auto crashes and widespread power failures. Three people died and another injured in Ottawa County Iowa after a pickup collided with a trailer truck in freezing rain while northern New York and Nebraska saw multiple fatalities as buses and vehicles skidded on slick highways. Des Moines shut a municipal airport, Omaha schools closed, and Offutt AFB limited operations. 10,000 homes lost power in Missouri as crews worked overnight. Traffic ground to a near halt from Omaha to Lincoln and across southeastern Minnesota as 42 mph winds and heavy snowfall reduced visibility to zero.
