Ace Jim Jacoby demonstrates an unusual ducking tactic in a rubber bridge hand. Vulnerable North–South, dealer Hast Thedding. West’s preemptive bid steered opponents into 3NT rather than 4 spades. North used a descriptive takeout double. neither contract bid spaces. Both contracts could succeed with correct defense.
In a bridge hand West led diamonds to protect the suit, but Jacoby's careful ducking and defense yielded a spade run and control of the diamonds. East's quick ace and subsequent play allowed Jacoby to win nine tricks for the contract. The lesson: risking a trick in one suit can ensure the nine that seal the contract.
The New York City Opera announces spring shows with new productions of Donizetti Maria Smarra and Leò Holby Summer and Smoke. A Kennedy Center season runs May 3 to May 14 with 15 performances of five operas. Plans also include Offenbach The Tales of Hoffmann next fall and 1978 Donizetti Anna Bolena as part of a queen cycle.
