Hospital price controls urged to curb hospital bills
Washington. Former government economist A Ernest Fitzgerald told the Cost of Living Council that federal price controls on hospitals fuel multimillion dollar cost overruns in patient bills. He and two nonprofits petitioned for a 6 percent ceiling on each hospital service and daily charges, contending 11.6 percent annual increases far exceed goals. They criticized IRS revenue adjustments that allow price hikes above Phase 3 limits, urging reinstatement of Phase 2 posting requirements. Ralph Nader's Health Research Group and Gary Grindler joined in the filing.
