Vegas pilot slain in Baja shootout over marijuana raid
An American pilot from Las Vegas was killed and a California attorney jailed after a gun battle during a Mexican marijuana smuggling raid near Ensenada. Philip Murrell Barton, 28, allegedly fired on federal police and soldiers as his plane approached the airstrip, while attorney Robert Lee Grimes of San Diego was wounded and later arraigned. Police said six tons of marijuana were flown into the United States in multiple flights from Mazatlan. Vermont ratified the Equal Rights Amendment, becoming the 26th state to approve the measure.

Six indicted by jury in dope case in Orange County
Six persons including a father and son were indicted today by the Orange County Grand Jury on narcotics charges. Investigators reported seizure of more than 100 pounds of marijuana, a fully equipped drug lab, and chemical formulas from a Fullerton residence. Police seized 40 pounds of marijuana from another Fullerton home and, in Costa Mesa, two pill presses and about 25,000 amphetamine tablets from Vaudra D. Nunley and his son. The drug lab and most marijuana were taken from Jonathan Lowry's Fullerton home, with the remainder from a residence at 1314 West Raymond Avenue in Fullerton occupied by Rue Steele, Dennis Swiden, and Collette Cone.
