Compromise Looms Over Guard Training Debate in House
In Washington Rep Osmers criticized a subcommittee move to end the six month active duty training rule. A Brooks plan proposes a compromise allowing 21 weeks for under 18 percent recruits and a June 1958 sunset to the six tenths rule while Army opposition cites need for six months basic training. The proposal has mixed support among lawmakers and the National Guard Association backs it with reservations.

Attack on Mindszenty Sparks Uprising Scattered
In Budapest an article from official papers claims Mindszenty exploited his refuge to direct political actions from the American Legation. It warns Catholics against royalists and urges priests to join a “peace movement” while noting Russian presence and potential threats. US Legation denies using the refuge for political aims. In Portsmouth, England, British warships salute the American flag for Independence Day as the Hardhead submarine joins operations.
