A gunman killed Syrian refugee politician Ghassan Jedid in a Beirut street as he left his home. Police pursued a fleeing suspect, exchanged fire, and claimed the gunman’s death. The victim, a former Syrian army major and leader of a Syrian Social Nationalist party faction, was identified as Tzalt Shaath.
In Point Lookout Maryland three Navy attack bombers firing on a Chesapeake Bay target off Bloodsworth Island apparently struck the Coast Guard lighthouse. Two lighthouse keepers received minor scratches as missiles damaged the structure though no fire occurred.
Stockholm AP Matta Toren Swedish stage and screen actress died of a subarachnoid hemorrhage at 31 after a hospital visit hours earlier following a stage performance. She was married to Italian director Leonarda Bercovici and left a four year old daughter. Toren, who came to the United States in 1947, worked in American films before returning to Europe, primarily in Rome where she befriended Ingrid Bergman.
Reports say a 2,400 ton British tanker with 17 crew members may have been captured by pirates near Singapore. Ice conditions could force the missing ship Landak to winter near the South Pole as search planes and the Japanese Soya Maru icebreaker monitor the situation. Survivors and remaining crew details remain unclear while authorities await further word.

The car shattered timber guardrail and wreckage littered the rocks. authorities consider death may be from accident or own action pending investigation.
Denver patrolman Lyle E. Hamlin aged 42 rescued a girl who tumbled from a car amid rush hour at a three way intersection. He was totaled to a hospital with a broken arm after stepping in front of John L. Drake’s car as traffic halted. Drake was charged with careless driving.
