Water lessons from rainfall and urban spread in Long Beach
Rainfall in the Long Beach basin largely drains to the sea due to hard pan soil and extensive impervious surfaces. Above Whittier Narrows, water is more often captured underground, with 2400 acres of spreading grounds feeding underground reservoirs. Last winter brought underground replenishment. 1958 saw rising water tables after years of decline. This drought year dampens prospects, though late winter rains help. Includes misc notes on Ed Lenahan prank, a sky heart over Belmont Shore, Park Estates trees, Las Vegas temps, Terminal Island subsidence, and local bistro quips.
