Met Museum admits three Etruscan sculptures are forgeries
The Metropolitan Museum of Art confessed that three major Etruscan terra cotta warriors dating to 500 B C are forgeries. Director James J. Rorimer said the works, shown since 1933, were created by a 20th century forger, with manganese dioxide glaze and deliberate breaking of the pieces to imply authenticity. Discovery followed Joseph Noble’s investigations.
