Powers Told of Stabbing Messler in Murder Trial

In Houston court Candace Messler testified that Melvin Lane Powers said he would kill her husband Jacques Mossler for a payoff. Witness Frank Mulvey described reoccurring approaches by Candace or Powers to hire him to murder Messler, and asserted Powers later claimed to have killed Mossler. The trial pits Mrs. Mossler and Powers against state charges of premeditated murder in a suspected affair motive.

Warrants Issued for Ken Kesey in Cuckoo's Nest Writer Case

San Francisco authorities issued a second arrest warrant for novelist Ken Kesey after he failed to appear in court on a possession charge. A Redwood City warrant had already been issued when Kesey missed a parole hearing in a marijuana case. Carolyn Adams, 19, was arrested with Kesey and received a continuance to enter a plea. Humboldt County deputies reported Kesey’s abandoned colorful school bus found near Orick.

Four Year House Term Under Fire In Hearings

Washington AP UPI Republican congressmen joined by the senior Democrat condemned President Johnsons four year house term as a step away from popular government. Five GOP members opened hearings before the House Judiciary Committee with opposition testimony. Chairman Emanuel Celler warned against a permanent cat tail congress subservient to the White House, saying the present none year term keeps members on their toes.

County Orders Open Exam in Health Officer Search

Los Angeles County supervisors voted 4 to 2 to open an examination for a new health officer after two candidates failed a promotion test. Acting health officer Dr. Gerald A. Heidbreder passed with 75.85 percent. other candidates scored 69.239 and 68.95 percent.

Girl 16 Gets 10 Years in Arizona Killings

Dixie Lee Radcliff, 16, daughter of an Ohio preacher, was sentenced in Flagstaff Superior Court to up to 10 years for her role in two killings. Judge Melvin Shelley ordered 414 to 5 years for accessory after the fact and four to five years for a related charge. sentences run consecutively. Radcliff, due to turn 17, had fled Ohio with her ex-convict boyfriend after two New Hampshire men were fatally shot in northern Arizona over Labor Day weekend. Her boyfriend, Donald Boggs, 23, of Londonderry, Ohio, pleaded guilty and received a death sentence.
