California 18 as Age of Majority Cuts Welfare Aid
California's new age of majority law lowers adulthood to 18, removing about 29,000 young adults from AFDC and cutting welfare payments by roughly 40 million across state and local funds. Social Welfare Director Robert Carleson noted 18-year-olds will no longer qualify as dependents, with exceptions for drinking, veteran benefits, foster care, and certain child support orders.

No tax boost seen in new state budget
Sacramento reports Gov. Reagan will propose a $7-billion-plus budget with no tax increases. Verne Orr, state finance director, says the economy looks strong for 1972 and at least $400 million in additional general fund revenue is expected for 1972-73. The current $6.8-billion budget could rise to $7.2 billion or more. Orr expects legislators in 1972 to avoid tax-raising bills.
