Coal Town Fire Cuts Heart Out of Springhill
A wind driven fire razed much of Springhill Nova Scotia's Main Street destroying about 15 businesses and five apartment houses. Mayor Ralph Gilroy warned the town may never recover from the disaster which follows a 1956 mine explosion that killed 39. Firefighters, aided by nearby towns, contained the blaze after hours of embers and a brief evacuation scare.
