Two American Seamen Trek 750 Miles to Desert Legion
Two U S seamen from Oklahoma City and Philadelphia fled the French Foreign Legion after trekking 750 miles across North Africa in 33 days to return to the United States. They reached Tangier December 12 and reported desertion to the U S consulate. They fled with 46 deserters including Hungarians and Germans, aided by Algerian nationalists, after harsh conditions and mockery of their clothing. They planned to sail next month on the Independence liner once repatriated.

Seeing a Yule Tree Riesel’s Best Present
Victor Riesel, blinded by an acid attack 21 months ago, describes walking to Rockefeller Center during Christmas. He continues typing his column with partial vision and uses a headset to judge type and color as doctors say his remaining sight is limited. Three hoodlums were later jailed for the attack, and Riesel notes his commitment to reporting on labor racketeers despite his injuries.
