Quotas on meat imports stay suspended for 1973
Treasury Secretary George P. Shultz announced the United States will continue the suspension of meat import quotas through 1973 to boost domestic supplies and help hold down food prices. He said the policy aims to moderate inflation and that extending the suspension could raise 1974 imports by about 10 percent. Major beneficiaries include Australia New Zealand and Mexico. U S import standards will remain high and USDA reviews will occur quarterly.

Nightmare welfare rules deter work says Senate study
A congressional study criticizes welfare rules as a nightmarish set of regulations that discourage recipients from taking paid jobs. It cites examples from New Jersey showing modest net gains from work, and notes federal and state rules affect 43 aid programs. Rep. Martha Griffiths calls the policies confiscatory and says few examine job value to beneficiaries.
