Congress probes IRS list of political enemies cleared
The panel found no proof that the IRS targeted the 575 individuals named on the so called enemies list for political reasons. The list included John Wayne and Billy Graham among many others, with auditors noting the group skewed toward entertainment and liberal donors. Prominent names surfaced such as Burt Lancaster, Shirley MacLaine, Paul Newman, Georgia O Keefe, George McGovern backers, and former officials like Mortimer Caplin, Clark Clifford, and Angier Biddle Duke. The investigation outlined audits tied to deductions typical of high earners, not political retribution.

Long Beach tide lands suit plan sparks state city clash
State finance official Mary Gladish urged the Lands Commission to sue to recover tidelands oil revenues, arguing more than $500 million has flowed to the state from Long Beach oil fields. City leaders, led by City Manager John Mansell, opposed the move, saying a suit would cost money with little treasury gain and that funds would shift from the general fund to the tidelands trust.
