Gold Hunter Finds Riches in Wahgi Valley New Guinea
In 1933 Australian Dan Leahy discovered the Wahgi Valley in New Guinea while exploring with two companions. He later hosted journalist Dr. John Nicholls Booth at his farm, detailing his gold finds, coffee and cattle wealth, and views on European and native roles in the highlands amid a restrictive settler regime. He recalled fighting days, a $200,000 US gold haul, and predicted tea may outpace coffee as the major income.
