Endorphin from pituitary eyed for pain and withdrawal
UCLA researchers report synthetic beta endorphin from the pituitary shows opiate like effects in cancer pain and methadone withdrawal. Trials involve three patients, two cancer cases with good to mild improvement and one with none, with morphine and saline controls. Further study aims to assess pain relief and addiction risk.

Senility can be treated says aging expert at briefing
Washington reports Dr. Carl Eisdorfer of the University of Washington said senility is not inevitable and about one third of elderly with cognitive decline can fully recover with treatment. He cited that many cases stem from treatable issues like mood, nutrition, medications, and trauma and urged therapies to maintain independence as the elderly population grows.

Booster heart pump advances from Cleveland Clinic project
Cleveland Clinic researchers win a 1.2 million National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute contract to develop a permanently implanted booster pump.
