Tiny Saury May Be a Boon to Troubled Fish Fleet
A long ignored saury could aid the San Pedro fishing fleet by opening a new export market amid mackerel fleet layup after a test by the State Health Department found excessive DDT. Exploratory work by the Interior Bureau of Commercial Fisheries at La Jolla shows saury from the Pacific Northwest to California forming a potential fishery. The fish, 5 to 15 inches, are used as bait and food in Japan and have attracted Soviet interest. Research aims to quantify abundance and develop harvesting methods, including mechanized gear, as high American wages make hand fishing impractical.
