Legislative plan urged for EOP college access
Legislative Analyst A Alan Post urged a statewide plan to unify Economic Opportunity Programs for disadvantaged students. He said current EOPs operate independently across the University of California state colleges and community colleges, duplicating efforts and pressuring expansion. Post proposed using community colleges as entry points before moving academically ineligible students to four year campuses with support from nearby state colleges and universities.

Dole Recipient Fares Better On Health Insurance
In Sacramento the Senate Business and Professions Committee heard that government programs for the poor create a social paradox with better care for the indigent than the average worker. Senator Alfred Song urged clearer policy literature and noted insurers often do not cover routine surgeries fully. He cited high costs in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and gaps in Medicare, Medi Cal, and various private plans. Representatives from Blue Shield, Kaiser, and other insurers defended coverage levels while calling for more medical personnel to curb costs.
