California Supreme Court backs spousal support despite premarital pact
The California Supreme Court ruled unanimously that a spouse may be entitled to support from the other after marriage ends, even when a premarital agreement waives property rights. The decision lets trial courts decide support awards, in the Santa Barbara County case of Lolita and William Higgason, where the wife sought support after the husband fell ill and the marriage dissolved.
