Union Officer Slain by Paint Contractor
In Los Angeles a painting contractor Howard Newman 36 shot and killed Rod Erick MacKenzie 64 business agent for Local 35 of the Painters District Council after claiming MacKenzie forced a union man off a job. Newman told police he wanted MacKenzie to jump into a swimming pool to humiliate him. He shot MacKenzie in the stomach as the official approached the pool area and then shot him again after MacKenzie tried to run.
