Reagan backs Ford if Ford wins nomination
Ronald Reagan told ABC that he would support President Ford if Ford defeats him for the 1976 GOP nod. He refused similar pledges to Rockefeller or others, calling it a hypothetical question while noting a remote risk of an extremist Republican winning. He ruled out a third party and defended his tax cut plan, acknowledging necessary state and local tax hikes to replace cuts in federal programs.
