Boise Idaho report notes drought from winter has turned forests into tinderboxes. Some 8,600 fires have burned in national forests this year, three times the average, with nearly 400,000 acres scorched and total fires exceeding 10,000 since records began. Firefighters numbered over 7,000 in a busy three weeks as demand rises.
Thick smoke over the Salmon Mountains hinders air support and makes damage estimates difficult. Officials say the Klamath National Forest fire has scorched about 48,000 acres with lines around most of the blaze, yet containment remains uncertain as crews push to widen burn lines and monitor hot spots.
Sacramento AP reports state inspectors captured 350 Japanese beetles this year as planes from East Coast cities arrived. A Department of Agriculture spokesman said enough got through to threaten a damaging infestation next year. The beetle targets peaches corn grapes and rose bushes with flights from Baltimore Cincinnati Boston Philadelphia most affected, though only about a third were inspected due to manpower.
