Humane Slaughter Law Now Enforced Nationwide
The Federal Humane Slaughter Act, in effect since July 1, is now enforced at 354 of 530 federally inspected meat houses. Packers must render animals painless before slaughter using methods such as carbon dioxide, electrical shock, mechanical stunners, or rifle bullets. State laws are expanding, with Washington and several other states adopting or considering similar regulations.
