Dr H H Brookins head of United Civil Rights Committee urged a watchdog agency to curb ed the practices of money sharks in Watts South Los Angeles. He said complaints about inflated prices and usurious loans must be investigated by district attorney and consumer counsel to protect Negro residents from exploitative merchants and avoid a repeat of last August's riot.

Fire Captain Collapses at Blaze Scene
Fire Captain Neil Maddux, 52, of Engine Company Nine, collapsed at a vacant warehouse fire at 162 Eldridge Street around 2 PM. He was revived after nearly two minutes and taken to Memorial Hospital. tests ruled out heart attack and he was sent home. Acting Battalion Chief Gallagher said exhaustion or smoke inhalation caused the collapse. the fire caused about $2,000 damage and the tire origin was not immediately known.

Last Rites for Beauty Queen Keren Peterson Set
The 21-year-old Miss Placenta beauty queen Keren Peterson died in a Riverside Freeway collision near Anaheim. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. at Placenta Presbyterian Church with Rev. Donald J. MacInnes officiating. A Karen Peterson memorial fund is being created at the church. Peterson, raised in Los Altos Long Beach, leaves parents Harry W. and Mrs. Peterson and brother Randall.
