Kite record tied on mountain flight from Japan summit
Newport Beach man Mike Harker, 26, a kite flying instructor in Switzerland, leapt from Japan's highest peak and flew 12.5 miles in 23 minutes before landing on a mountain trail. Swiss producer Frank Lang said Harker used a helicopter to guide the flight, claiming a world record. The prior mark was 87.5 miles in 12 minutes 63 seconds, set in 1963 in Germany. Harker later commented he was excited and unable to sleep, with radio communications from Lang reportedly jammed.
