Tiger Cataract Surgery at Lincoln Park Zoo
An endangered Siberian tiger at Lincoln Park Zoo underwent cataract surgery at the University of Illinois Medical Center after being sedated and prepped on the operating table. Surgeons Dr. Edward Cotlier and Dr. Samuel J. Vainisi performed the left and right eye procedures, respectively, with Dr. Barbara Stein monitoring the tiger’s heart and pulse during anesthesia. The operation took about six minutes per eye, and post operative care includes eye drops three to four times daily for weeks. The tiger had already lost vision and struggled to find food prior to surgery, with hopes that sight will improve.
