Political Earthlings Nearly Kill U S Planetary Probes
National recap of a House Senate conference on NASA funding. Negotiators preserved the planetary exploration program with a $4.9 billion total NASA appropriation for the current year, balancing cuts across Apollo missions and launch vehicles while restoring most Voyager funds. The plan limits a Mars Mariner 1971 reentry project and negotiates adjustments against Senate and House figures. The result preserves major planetary exploration while trimming final budget lines.

Dr. Robert Kraft of Mt. Wilson Palomar observatories reports study of about 200 sun like stars showing slow rotation results from expanding magnetic fields rather than planetary influence. Solar wind clouds carry magnetic flux lines that act like rubber bands, applying torque to slow stellar spin.
